This unfortunate drawing of a 14-year-old boy in Queens happened at Beach 73rd and Rockaway Beach at 6 pm. The incident took place on Sunday, yet the pain of it hangs in the New York air.
Furthermore, to add to the horror, the boy’s mother was also there. Her poor terrified soul watched people pulling her son out of the water. We cannot imagine the pain she must be feeling. Still, our empathies and prayers go to her and their family.
More so, the lifeguards left the beach around 5:30 pm. However, suddenly someone came yelling about a boy in the water.
Only then Basia Lewandowski, an ex-lifeguard, jumped into action. She stated that the beach closed early due to thunder and lightning, causing most lifeguards to return to their clubhouse. She grabbed a whistle and, accompanied by her friend, another lifeguard, rushed into the waves.
“We do what we call a diving line. And so the lifeguards started diving. It was a miracle we found his body,” said Lewandowski.
Death of the Boy
Despite the lifeguards’ desperate efforts and the mother’s agonising wails, the boy couldn’t survive.
Sadly, no one could save the teen from taking his last breath. According to the bystanders, the teen was underwater for several minutes. However, later on, he was pronounced dead at St. John’s Hospital.
Water Safety and Awareness
The incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of water safety and the need for increased awareness among beachgoers. Although not always visible, Rip currents are powerful underwater currents that can pull swimmers away from the shore. Identifying and responding to a rip current can differentiate between life and death.
